Show Notes

My very first guest on this podcast shared how he changed his name (as an experiment) in order to get better responses to his CV. Sounds extreme, but bias is something many jobseekers say they are concerned about, whether it is ageism, sexism, classism or racism.

So how do you deal with biases and discrimination in the recruitment process?

I had a conversation on exactly this topic with Virginia Franco, a leading resume writer based in North Carolina, which is being replayed in this Sonologue.

I also believe there are two types of people, when it comes to careers: Complainers and Obtainers

Complainers blame their problems on everyone or everything else, yet take no action to fix their situation. Obtainers accept their challenges, embrace them, act on them and overcome them.

This holds also for how you deal with Bias. You can complain about it, or you can act to minimize it by focusing on what is in your span of control.

I read this quote in December 2019, and I think about it nearly every single day:

The best years of your life are the ones in which you decide your problems are your OWN.
You do not blame them on your mother, the economy or the president.
You realise that you control your OWN destiny. ~Albert Ellis

So do give a listen to this short snippet and I hope it’s useful in tuning up your own approach.
