49. Radhika Gupta: Unbreakable
Show Notes

When I watched ‘The Girl with the Broken Neck’ talk on Youtube, I knew I had to have the Speaker on this podcast.

Was it because of the fact that she was born a little different from everyone else and has seen success beyond most people’s imaginations, in spite of, or rather, because of how unique she is?

Or was it that she got accepted into Wharton and graduated with the highest honours?

Or that she went through 7 heartbreaking rejections from the top consulting firms and considered jumping off a building, but didn’t?

Or was it that she left a cushy job on Wall Street to come back to India to start a financial services business, during a recession, in spite of everyone advising her that it was a terrible idea?

Or was it that under her leadership as MD and CEO, Edelweiss Asset Management has grown to $9 billion in managed assets?

There’s so much to learn from Radhika Gupta and in this conversation, she shares with us the following:

-Her experience growing up as the daughter of an Indian diplomat and living in India, Pakistan, Nigeria, Italy and the US and her top advice for someone who’s never lived or worked outside their city or country

-Going through rejection after rejection after college, and finally getting an offer from McKinsey in Boston, where she met the senior partner who had a reputation of being a tough cookie. Radhika shares her  mindset on how to prepare for something when one has been through recent adversity and even suicidal thoughts.

-As a shy person not fond of public speaking, what it is that made her agree to do the famous talk ‘The Girl with the Broken Neck?

- Upon returning to India, Radhika thought “clients would bend over backwards to give me their money. I was wrong. The reality of running a business with no revenue, taking home no salary led to lots of self-doubt.” Radhika shares the juicy story of how she got hired by her very first paying client.

-Her formula of hiring ‘misfits’ and why it works
